Fiji: Special police unit planned for enhanced border patrol

A special police unit will join the ranks of established border control agencies in a bid to step up security at key entry points.

Members of the unit are presently training and will be empowered with the right to search, inspect and arrest suspects.

With increasing passenger load and sophistication in crime operation, police want to be at the forefront of border control. Inadequate baggage check machines and the absence of a mechanism to keep track of visitors arriving by sea is one of the main reasons police want to join border control, spokeswoman Ema Mua said.
