Barbados: Gov't's six-month amnesty ignites political backlash

The David Thompson administration is facing some political backlash over its announced six-month amnesty for Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nationals now living in the island illegally, with opposition parties warning it could have serious repercussions.

Opposition leader Mia Mottley was among those issuing the caution at a press conference held after Thompson's Tuesday announcement of the amnesty that begins on June 1st.

She said while the Prime Minister was acting within the law, his statement 'gave the distinct impression that the Barbados government is only concerned with the illegal immigrants in Barbados from Caribbean countries but not those who are here from outside the region; that is from Europe and North America'.
