C.N.M.I.: Officials want to delink immigrant work cap and tourism issues
May 19, 2009
Vice Speaker Benjamin J. Cruz will ask members of Congress to separate two issues linked by public law so a debate on Marianas tourism won't hinder Guam's ability to prepare a workforce for the military buildup.
U.S. Public Law 110-229 will replace immigration laws in the Commonwealth of Northern Marianas Islands with those of the federal government, which would restrict travel from Russia and China. Part of the law also would lift a cap on how many immigrant workers Guam could hire.
Cruz and Sen. Eddie Calvo will testify about the law before the Subcommittee on Insular affairs, Oceans and Wildlife today.
