Australia: Tamils seek humanitarian visas for Sri Lankans with Aussie kin

May 19, 2009
The Sri Lankan high commissioner to Australia has suggested that members of the Tamil Tigers were behind a vicious attack on two students who had acid thrown on their faces during a home invasion.

The fallout from the attack in Sydney, which police say was politically motivated, came as Immigration Minister Chris Evans said he expected to see more asylum seekers from Sri Lanka as 'the violence and the displacement take effect'.

The Melbourne Tamil community has called on the Australian Government to reintroduce a special category of humanitarian visa for Sri Lankans with relatives here.
