Spain: Ailing economy causing decrease in illegal entry attempts

May 15, 2009
A Spanish official says the number of poor migrants caught trying to sail to the Canary Islands is down by one half this year, largely because Spain's economy is ailing and no longer a lure for them.

Secretary of State for Immigration Consuelo Rumi says other factors curbing the exodus were tighter surveillance of African coasts and development programs designed to raise living standards and keep Africans at home.

Police say that in the four months of 2009, 1,472 Africans were caught trying to reach Spain's Canary Islands, down from 2,784 in the same period of 2008.
