Canada: Multiculturalism on the Retreat - George Abraham

May 08, 2009

By George Abraham

The latest test came to an end in Ottawa last week when 30,000 Tamil Canadians staged one of the largest public displays of ire in this capital's history. Over the previous two weeks, the demonstrators had carried flags of the Tamil Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and portraits of 'Tamil leader' V. Prabhakaran, much to the chagrin of political leaders who have supported their cause previously. Not this time, though.

Even neophytes at a local high school could have told Ignatieff and Layton that it would have been entirely inappropriate to show up while the Tiger flag fluttered nearby. As the demonstration on Parliament Hill entered its second week, residents of Ottawa held animated discussions over why a group of agitated Canadians were holding a city to ransom over a rebellion in another part of the world. 'We don't hear of Canadians demonstrating in foreign cities over problems they have in Canada, do we?' a high school student asked one of his peers.

There may be a simple explanation for these kids being ahead of the Canadian curve on the nettlesome issue of multiculturalism. Their Grade 9 geography textbook has a chapter on Immigration, and here are its opening lines: 'Immigrants or descendants of immigrants make up 98 per cent of Canadians.

This fact helps to explain why Canada's population can be described as a 'tossed salad' of peoples, or more formally, a multicultural society.'
