Indonesia: Five former diplomats convicted of embezzling immigration fees
April 30, 2009
The Corruption Court convicted five former officials to the Indonesian consulate general in Kinabalu, Malaysia, to 20 months in prison Wednesday for their involvement in embezzling immigration fees between 2000 and 2005.
Muhammad Sukarna, the consul general from 2000 to 2002, Kurniawan Roebadi, the consul general from 2004 to 2005 and former immigration officials Mas Tata Machron, Irsyafli Rosul and Makdum Tahir were found guilty of embezzling RM 2.5 million by doubling immigration fees charged to visa applicants.
'The defendants are legally and convincingly guilty of collective and continuous corruption and therefore shall serve one year and eight months in prison each,' presiding judge Sutiyono said when reading the verdict for the first four defendants at the Corruption Court.
