Sri Lanka: Passport applicants will be notified by texting

April 09, 2009
Sri Lanka Immigration and Emigration (SLIE - formerly Department of Immigration and Emigration) together with Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the National Mobile Service Provider, recently launched a new service, where by all passport applicants would be notified via SMS once their passport is ready for collection. The new service would provide much convenience to passport applicants as they could now go about their day-to-day tasks until the SMS is sent notifying them that their passports are ready for collection, saving them both time and money. The new service would be available to all mobile users irrespective of which network they belong to.

Speaking at the event, Mr. P B Abeykoon, Controller General, Sri Lanka Immigration and Emigration, said, "we have implemented an SMS notification system to notify passport applicants once the passport is ready for collection and what we are hoping to achieve by this is to deliver the passport within the promised duration. This is one of the services delivered by the public and private sector partnership (PPP) and we are very happy to have Mobitel in partnership with us in this service. This is another example of Sri Lanka Immigration & Emigration working towards delighting customers.

We are very proud to be the pioneers in introducing SMS notifications to the public sector. Incidentally, Sri Lanka Immigration & Emigration's launching of this service coincides with its 60th Anniversary of the department and the year of Information Technology announced by the government.'
