Spain: Officials held in immigration fraud cases
The Associated Press, April 1, 2009
Madrid (AP) -- A Spanish official says government employees including police and civil servants have been arrested for allegedly accepting money from foreigners to speed up residency applications.
An official with the Interior Ministry office in Almeria says an unspecified number of suspects were arrested Tuesday in that southern city.
The official spoke Wednesday and did not give numbers. But the Almeria newspaper Teleprensa reported that at least seven people have been arrested. It said three are National Police officers who deal with immigration affairs and one is a civil servant.
