Italy: 350 illegal entrants arrive on Sicilian coast
The latter were brought into port after there had been reports of a large raft headed for the Sicilian coastline. The naval-aviation group of the Messina Financial Police set in motion EU and national coast surveillance procedures with the 'G.105 Ballali' from the naval manoeuvres station in Messina.
Around 11 pm, the Financial Guard boat sighted the raft not far from Portopalo di Capo Passero (Siracusa), a 20-metre-long boat with 200 immigrants aboard. The coastal guard craft, along with a motorized patrol boat from the port authority, brought in the immigrants to the port. Afterwards they were entrusted to the care of medical staff who had immediately been alerted, to then be transferred to temporary holding centres. The Financial Guard and those in charge of the group set up to counter illegal immigration at the Siracusa prosecutor's office immediately set in motion investigative activities to identify the smugglers. Yesterday 220 had instead arrived on Lampedusa.
